Remembering the Good Old Days...
Ah yes, it wasn't long ago we all bent over our keyboards and pounded out our latest entry for one of Rance's essay contests. As I think back on it now I realize Rance must have laughed until he cried at not only the number of responses, but at the seriousness with which some were written, including myself.

In a tribute to Rance, I hereby deem every Thursday to be "Queer Essay Topic Day", because let's face it folks, his topics were queer. For today, in 500 words or less, please write about the following:

If sentenced to death in a Hollywood Prison ran by celebrutantes who narcissisticly implemented a "last reel" instead of a "last meal", what movie would you choose to watch and why?

I would choose.....Les Souers Bronte a French film released 1979. Not only would it take them several days or weeks to find this movie and track it down, it has taken me several years, to no avail, and I even search in a Film Archive in Paris, France! Yes, Les Souers Bronte, a bunch of legendary French film stars before they were famous, playing English sisters. I'd revel in the good acting, but exceedingly bad script and execution of the film, while waiting for my own execution. And then I'd so politely ask if I could die by the guillotine. And if Angelina Jolie could be the one to release the blade.

a helpful hint: "it's pat: the movie" might actually make death seem pleasant for some of you.

i, however, am already thusly sentenced; and so, i would probably select something more palatable. bottlerocket, for instance.

That's very clever thinking of you Rancette...very clever indeed.

I've heard through the grapevine there's a game of libation to be played with that movie.

I'd watch the Shawshank Redemption and then get the heck out of dodge.

I'd watch "The Great Escape" mainly for ideas.

No question about it...I would choose the Marx brothers' "A Day at the Races". If I'm going to be executed, I at least want to go out with a stupid grin on my face.

I had a hard time for this one and heres why, i was thinking about all the movies that I've seen a million times, but really i could just go over those in my head.
Then i thought, hey I could watch a movie thats really really long! Then The Lord of the Rings popped in my hizzead! Yes! And i could ask them to get a HUGE screen with LOUD surround sound and a comfy chair. ALL THREE would have to be played since they are kind of one movie anyway, and it would have to be the extended version. Yes. yes. the nerd has spoken. That just sounds like a great time to me. a Great time.

Welcome Lelu. I would have to say this would probably be my choice as well.

I would choose The Shawshank Redemption.

An excellent film. Couldn't you just taste that beer as they drank it?

i would choose to watch "plan 9 from outer space", for two reasons. first, the only way to watch that movie is intoxicated... with any and/or every type of intoxicants you might choose. this would mean i wouldn't feel whatever came next. the second reason is that it truly is the worst movie ever made, therefore my executioners might take pity on me, after watching that my sentence might be commuted. the movie is punishment enough. here's hoping!

LOL at It's Pat. My dad went to see Spanglish and was disappointed because the problem between Adam Sandler & the Spanish lady wasn't cultural, it was a language problem.

So I recommended Bottle Rocket to Dad. Let's see if he likes it. Maybe their problem was only a language barrier too, I dunno, but Bottle Rocket was so much charming. DOn't you think?

LOL at movie is punishment enough!! Yeah, and I've always been meaning to see Plan 9 From Outer Space, but I'll make sure I get sloshed first.

Brain is way to far gone today for an essay. I'm sure to regret this attempt.

Ok, if forced to make such a decision immediately... the geek in me says it would be Star Wars 3. Because:
A) It doesn't come out 'til mid May, so I got a few months to appeal and/or escape.
B)I have a very poor memory, so I'd have to see the other five episodes first- really just one long saga anyhow. Buys me a few more hours.
C) It's not like I really have to pay attention, so time to pray and meditate to prepare for the end. My end, that is. Not the movie. Prayer probably won't help that. and
D) Most importantly, it comes out AFTER the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" movie, which I would not choose to die without seeing.

Given a choice of manner of death, well, "Death by Chocolate" works for me. Absolutely.

rancette, i hope you get to see the movie. my friend owns a copy and uses it as a test of friendship... if you watch the movie with him, he'll be your friend for life. now pay close attention to the flick, one of my favorites is the lawn chairs, and the bela lugosa look-alike at the end (taller, thinner).

Hm, tough to say. It would have to be something funny. Reno 911 kills me, but it's not a movie, but I'd watch that if I could. The characters are all great, and I can't really explain why it is so funny... it just is. Big Lebowski, very funny. Spinal Tap or any of the other mockumentaries. I really can't think right now. I just watched an entire season of Reno 911 and my head actually hurts from laughing so much. Anything where people are basically making huge asses out of themselves, I love that. And the bigger the ego, the bigger the ass. And of course, Naked Gun(s) and Bad Santa get funnier the more you watch. But my favorites are definately movies that are either funny or romantic, or both. Life has enough problems, why watch more? Unless there is strong artistic merit, then that's different (but they almost never do).

Breakfast at Tiffanys - I love Audrey, and it would be nice to go out in style. If they were killing you off you'd have the 'mean reds' anyway.

What I wouldn't choose is any of those 86 minute 'moviettes' that come out these days, they're so short you wouldn't even have time for mental preparation.

Since I'm a skilled negotiator, I would negotiate that I get to watch every single movie in history that has a link to Kevin Bacon a la Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Even The Passion of the Christ has a link to Kevin Bacon. Mel Gibson directed/produced The Passion of the Christ and also starred in Conspiracy Theory with Julia Roberts who starred in Flatliners with Kevin Bacon. Herego, any movie with Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, James Caviezel will be on the list.

At this rate, while I'll be tortured with bad movies like Shanghai Surprise, I will die an old bitter woman, wondering how a Canadian ended up on deathrow considering we don't have the death penalty here.

The movie I would want to watch one last time is Revenge of The Nerds. Why? I know it is really stupid, but it makes me laugh everytime. It is an 80's classic. I don't think that I would get too nervous about dying if picturing Booger, Ogre, Pointdexter, and Lamar in my mind.

Monty Python And The Holy Grail...
Soon after, I will challenge my executor to answer three questions.
If he?s crazy enough to say ?yes?, I?ll make sure he gets ejected from the place.
If ?no?, I?ll propose to be the one who answers his three questions. Again, the possibilities:
If I get them right I?ll get a free-pass out.
If I get them wrong, well, I?ll be the one ejected from the room ? achieving freedom and the perfect nonsense scape? is there a better way out?
(thank you monty python)

I'm kind of new here but this is a good question. I'd go for something light and something fun....like "Hard to Hold". If I was facing my final days, seeing Rick Springfield's butt might be the only thing that could put a smile on my face.

Haven't seen it, but it sounds like I've been fortunate. If I was dying (or thought I was dying), no thanks to the intoxicants, they all ultimately just create more anxiety. With enough anxiety, it literally feels like you are dying, or you are going to die, or we're all going to die, or whatever. Mm, relax... a nice hot hot bath, drink lots of water, and just a little or no caffeine. Good thoughts. Then die.

First of all I didn't know Rick Springfield had a butt. I thought he had one of those 'gone-asses'...And Reno 911?
The shorts the gay cop wears? That alone makes me laugh for hours. That is one funny show. They don't even need dialogue. Plan 9 (haven't seen it and now I MUST...cardboard headstone? hahaha)
Rubber, the entire gang's answers are great. I'd pick any of these.....and the comedies for sure.

1. Breakfast at Tiffanys for going out in style.
2. Big Lebowski for that dance number
3. Spinal Tap or Guffman or Best of Show (we named our puppy's first toy her 'busy bee' in honor )
4. Shawshank Redemption for yes, Annie that taste of beer.

5. Monty Python and The Holy Grail for the whole damn movie
6. Bottle Rocket. I love that movie. (Also don't forget Rushmore)

But I'd have to pick the best:
7. A Day at the Races or any of their movies.
THE MASTERS...especially Groucho.

I LOVE GROUCHO. Actually in his day, he might have been Rance.

I have never been a Leo fan, BUT, HOWEVER, ALAS, I did like the Aviator, although I would have given it a higher rating if Scorcese had casted someone who could act like Matt Damon in the role of Howard Hughes. But then I recently saw The Beach w/ Leonardo in it and I have to say it wasn't really that bad.

But I don't know much about him, so I guess it would be possible for Leo to be Rance. Dunno.

I can't think of a single movie that would torture me, but I know that when my husband calls me over to the TV to trick me into watching that wrestler "Rikishi Phatu" (sp) drop someone down and give them the butt-face move, it is agony....or a portion of Fear Factor where the contestants are eating animal innardy bits...recently I was flipping thru the channels and saw pro wrestlers having an eating contest, of guess what, animal innardy bits..most cow tongue eaten in 2 minutes. ewww

contrary to popular belief, leo dicaprio is very smart. He is introverted and observant, yet social at the same time. He was my original suspicion when I read some earlier entries, and I plugged in a few "clues" to google and Leo was a common denominator of all of them.

But who knows, I could be completely wrong. However that's my humble opinion.

I've heard of showing up fashionably late, but I believe I'm a day late and a dollar show.

I'd have to choose "White Chicks." I would want to do one last service to humanity and show these celebrutantes what a joke they really are.

If it didn't show them what a joke they are, at least maybe I'd give them a real good mind f*cking before I died. Either or would be cool in my book.

Now I must go dig out my History of the World Part I. It's been way to long since I've viewed that masterpiece...

If I wanted to laugh and say all the lines along with the movie shortly before death, I'd go with "Animal Crackers" my favorite Marx brothers movie...or maybe a good comedy like "The Best of The Best"...

But if I wanted to think about life in a "it's all well that ends well" kind of way I'd go with the documentary cultural musical phenomenon "Baraka"...except I'd make them skip the part with the baby chicks...that just freaks me out. Otherwise, that movie is a piece of art.

If I wanted to think of ways to escape and kick some ass...Chronicles of Riddick.

But yeah, I'd most want to watch Viggo, all ten or so hours of him..riding horses, killing, singing in elfish, and being a sweaty, dirty, manly man.

I'm thinking "Rocky Horror Picture Show". I'll sing along with all the songs and shout out all the comments. I'll throw rice and toast, and light my lighter, and by the time I'm done everyone will have either vamoosed or gone deaf and become disoriented from my.. ahem.. pleasant singing voice. And for those stalwarts still standing I'm trusting they'll be losers just like me who want to see it over and over again (I think I'm up over 50 now... times not years....) and have me teach them all the shout-outs, etc. so they'll keep me around long enough for my appeal to come through.

Show us your nipple. Thank you.

I'm a little late for this conversation, but my Last Reel would definitely be Forrest Gump.

This is the ultimate movie about being dealt a raw deal and overcoming the most extreme of obstacles. But, the greatest thing about Forrest is that he never once had any idea that he was actually faced with an obstacle to begin with.

This movie is so beautifully done that I should only hope to be so lucky to live such a satisfying life.

I've always been a huge supporter of fate, so this movie really gives you something to think about in the great scheme of how and why things really happen the way they do.

And, of course, in the end, Forrest gets what he deserves: an intelligent son. A son that embodies everything that he worked so hard to overcome in his life.

Yay... Again, I hope that I will be so lucky when it is my time to go...

If I had a chance to pick a second, it would be Big Fish. Another movie that chronicles an "unbelievable" existance of a seemingly ordinary, but absolutely extraordinary, person. And then #3 would be Joe Dirt... Obviously I like this genre. I guess this means I suffer from the fear of being insignificant. Oh well.

G'Night.
