Rance, my darling boy:

What would I do if I had the opportunity to run Fox studios for a year? Norman and I actually had executive positions at Warner's for a brief period some years ago so I feel like I can really address this issue from an insiders perspective.

-Greenlight more musical properties. There's not a person in America who doesn't need more tap dancing chorines in their life.

-Approve projects for the surviving members of old Hollywood. A new Kathryn Grayson/Jane Powell/Howard Keel picture should have lines around the block.

-Find an appropriate project for my fabulous, Oscar winning talents. I'm thinking perhaps a new musical version of 'Slaughterhouse Five' with me in the Valerie Perrine role or 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' with me as Nurse Ratched. Of course, I'll only be willing to do the latter if I can appear in stunning Bob Mackie creations rather than that white twill laundry bag Louise Fletcher had to endure.

-Pair our great directors with great musical properties. I am desperate for Tim Burton's version of 'Sweeney Todd', Quentin Tarantino's 'Assassins' and Steven Spielberg's 'Ragtime'.

-Pair aging, but respected actresses with up and coming young men to further increase their desirability and sex appeal. For instance, Jake Gyllenhaal and Susan Sarandon in a new musical version of 'From Here to Eternity'.

-Have Catherine Martin of Bazmark become the house costume and art direction czar for all projects.

-Roll back above the line costs by using talented, but cheaper names so that a family of four will not need to take out a second mortgage to attend a matinee.

-Tap into the population over the age of forty for an audience demographic. There are huge numbers of them starved for quality entertainment and they control more discretionary income than teenage boys.

Fondly,

MNM

wow MNM, i'm in the over 40 crowd and i don't know half those names! but i love the idea of matching older women with younger men. where can i apply? oops, my younger boyfriend might get upset.

your ideas are fantastic...kudos! you are proof that age shouldn't matter, but experience does. great guest job.

Dear Mrs. Maine,

I couldn?t agree more. It is hard to deny the ageless appeal of lyrics such as:

Have a little priest.
Sir, it's too good, at least.
Then again they don't commit sins of the flesh,
So it's pretty fresh.

I for one would vouch for the runaway success of a Frank Oz directed ?Naked Boys Singing? starring George Cloony, Hugh Jackman, and Johnny Depp.

Amazing to see that people are actually responding to the question asked "What Would You Do If You Ran Fox Studios for A year?". We both know, actually, we all should know that not a one of us would ever be given that opportunity so why bother even thinking about it.
Personally I don't care who you are, actor or not, if your connected and as stated in a previous message to you down with the "in" crowd then by all means drop me a line. I'm a 34 year old stay at home dad looking for a job in the movie industry. Downey Studios(their filming Lemony Snicket there right now) in Downey,CA is right across the street and would be like the opportunity to work as an assistant and eventually work my way up. So if you or anyone reading this has a "say" in what happens or can actually make something like this happen then drop me a line. I need to produce 400K in 10 years and hustling anything and everything on eBay isn't cutting it anymore. Wife say's it's time to get a "real job". I can also be reached via the AOL messenger "herbylives". Maybe I should start my own blog ..A Day in the Life of a 34 year old Stay at home dad".

"Tap into the population over the age of forty for an audience demographic. There are huge numbers of them starved for quality entertainment and they control more discretionary income than teenage boys. "

Heck you can bring that down to 30 really.. my friends and I always talk about how Hollywood is so youth minded they forget that the people with the real income to spend are in their 30's and 40's and right now we are not buying what they are selling. I can see it now.. intelligent scripts, actors cast because of real talent.. women over 50 given lead roles.. older women with younger men and yes equal time for full frontal male nudity.. ever min a woman is necked.. a man goes too!!

Thanks for your post .. and btw I love musicals.. I have been in community theatre for 8 years and have never done a straight play, so though you may be joking times sure seemed simpler when Gene Kelly was 'Singing in the Rain' and Natalie Wood was 'Feeling Pretty'!

Does anyone ever actually get to run Fox Studios for a whole year? Seems like they turn over people like Fatburgers on the flame.

Much as I like MNM's essay -- and Terese is my new idol -- this essay topic is, and I mean this in the most adoring way, kind of a yawn.

Can I be so bold as to offer a new topic suggestion Rance? Here's what I'd like to know from you and the Rance-o-philes: if you got to run the Screen Actors Guild for a day-week-month-year, whose SAG card would you revoke?

Think of it, the power to ensure that you would never have to see (insert ill-favored actor/actress name here) on screen again.

Ah... now that would be delicious...

Mrs Norman Maine's plan of action has too much sarcasm within sarcasm within feigned senility.. or sarcasm for me to follow the plan to its logical conclusion.

However, her devilish little plot reminded me of my own cultural slam dunk: the rap-shakespeare-inner-city musical. Oh, yeah. If 8 Mile can win best song, then I'm all over that mother.

My rap musical would have NO old slang either; it'd be all Rah (mmm, raw, for those who don't know the new slang.. but you will, oh, yes, you will.) Also it would have tons of vulgarity... just like the real Shakespeare.. "If thou beest Trinculo, come forth; I'll pull thee by the lesser legs: if any be Trinculo's legs, these are they. Thou art very Trinculo indeed: How cam'st thou to be the siege of this moon-calf? Can he vent Trinculos?" Riiiight.

Dear Mrs. Maine,

First things first... when I read the line "Rance, my darling boy" I'd swear I heard the sultry, smokey voice of Lauren Bacall. Too bad she actually had to smoke. It's always a pleasant thought to think of her and Humphrey hacking their lungs out between takes, coughing up flem, and then go back on camera for their onscreen kiss. But hey, on the bright side it's been said that Humphrey was a "brilliant smoker. He taught generations how to hold a cigarette, how to inhale, how to squint through the smoke." If only he could have taught the rest of us how to breathe through the smoke without developing lung cancer or smelling like a giant, walking ashtray. Oops. I just realized I was going on a rant, which is not my job, that's Rance's.

Back to topic....

Ah, a tap dancing chorine. Now we're talking. A little background here...I, at the age of 5, had probably already watched 75% of the movies that are now considered classics. I was addicted. My parents thought I was some sort of idiot savant. I kid you not. But, you're not going to believe this. I was 28 before I saw my first tap dancing chorine IN PERSON. And yes, it was in Branson, Missouri, THE entertainment capital of the world. I saw the Rockettes Christmas show and it was spectacular. It's amazing how about a dozen, bare legged women marching and tapping and high kicking their legs in unison is so darn entertaining. Can someone explain this phenomenon to me?

As to new projects for old Hollywood, how about old projects for old Hollywood? I'd love to see a remake of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?", wouldn't you?

Jake Gyllenhaal? Jake Gyllenhaal? Are you kidding me? How about Ryan Phillippe and Jessica Lange in a remake of "Love in the Afternoon" with the roles reversed of course.

And as to the rollback...MMMMMWWWWAAAAAAH! Big kiss from me. My husband and I took our kids to see Shrek II this weekend and it cost us $26.00 just to get in. After the over priced popcorn that isn't even fresh (it comes out of a bag) and the M&Ms for topping and four big gulp drinks, we spent well over $40.00 bucks. Can you say Illwaittilitcomesoutonvideo???? I can.

Thanks for the essay Mrs. Maine.

P.S. Who's Miss Vicki Lester?

This is one of the most interesting websites I have read. I have been very entertained by your posts and the reposts of others. I have not been this entertained in a long time. I feel like I just sneaked into a movie or stolen a magazine. Is there a charity/charities that I can make an anon donation to?

Hey, the gay guy here, you know that I loved this one; the old movie references, and especially the musicals, QT would do a great "Assassins".

Rance, now I have a question. Not that you'd know, but, have I become a total cynic? Because I really thought your last guest blog was a big joke, and I see all these comments of condolence littered about, I had to stop reading it! I mean, you did include it for its dark comedic merits, did you not? Well, let me know if I should join the priesthood already, and lead a life of penance.

This one is so short, I'm so proud of myself.

Yes, more musicals! And something with more interest than "Newsies". I like the "Pair the director with the property" game:

Martin Scorses's "Rent"
Frank Oz's "Wicked" (beyond the obvious connection)
F.F. Coppola's "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (OK, I'm thinking OOTB now)
John Waters' "Hairspray" (Oh, it's been done!)

Rance, I for one am thoroughly enjoying your blog and hope the fever it suffers cools so it will stay alive. Thanks for the post, the little gray cells are celebrating. I must be having a Near Life Experience.

What?s with the time standard? Is it just one more thing I should know but have no clue and now I really look stupid for asking? Is it a lesson in, time is an illusion, or maybe there is no time but the right time or just Hammer time? Are there points involved?

Here?s an idea on keeping your identity hidden. Get a bunch of your A list friends to say that they all are Rance. That way everyone would know and yet no one would know. Kind of Zen, huh?

Speaking of a tree hiding in a forest, the next time one of your friends wants a secret wedding they might want to have it the weekend of the Oscars. No need to even let the party planner in on the truth. Just another Oscar party. What a sting that would be.

Mrs. Norman Maine, we are on the same wavelength. I even dittoed some of the ideas in my essay. BTW, I saw a Jane Powell interview recently and does she look fabulous.
It would be great to see that there actually are people out there my age and older besides a randy Jack N.

Sending you a smile,

Thank you, Mrs. Norman Maine! You gave me the inspiration as to how I would run Fox Studios. First of all, let me state that I would ensure the continuation of Fox traditions by producing unoriginal, uninspired money machines... and I would accomplish this by:

- Using other people's inspirations to create my own.

- Greenlighting only sequels. (Because everyone in "the Industry" knows that the sequel generally makes more in domestic box office than the original.)

- Sequels I would suggest: "The Birds 2: Revenge of the Robins," "Gone With the Wind Again," "The Postman Always Rings Three Times," and of course, "Casablanca 2: The Return of Ilsa." And, as the head of Fox Studios, I would insist that we NOT cast Isabella Rossellini in the role of Ilsa (even though she's a dead ringer for her mother and fantastic actress) because she's too old to play fifty.

- Finally, as head of Fox Studios, I would fire someone at least once a week, just to keep everyone on their toes.

Facetiously yours,
Livijane

P.S. I have a suggestion for Rance's friend, Steve... but I'm unfortunately out of time. If interested, post and I'll follow suit. Cheers!

I feel like Alice in Wonderland. Therefore, "Aw Shit A Celebrity" continued...

INT. COSTUME PARTY - EVENING

LORA enters the party dressed as ALICE. She looks around herself confused
and realizes that GUY #1 AKA VINNIE and GUY #2 AKA HAL are eyeing her with interest.
VINNIE is dressed as ZORRO while HAL is wearing a ?Gone With the Wind?-esque dress
with a hoop skirt the sum of which is so burlesque it makes it impossible for
anyone there to talk about anything else... What Lora doesn't realize is that
RANCE also wearing a mask of sorts is standing right behind her.
Hal and Vinnie with a plate of shrimp in their hand approach her.

HAL & VINNIE (in unison): Care for some shrimp?

They push the plate right underneath her nose. Lora takes a step back.

LORA: Is this the way to the tea party?

HAL & VINNIE: Tea party? What tea party?

LORA: The Mad Hatter's Tea Party. I'm looking for Rance and the other angels.

HAL & VINNIE: That depends.

LORA: Depends on what?

HAL & VINNIE: Depends on if you chose the right portal... Shrimps?

Lora looks at the plate of shrimps half curious, half suspicious.

LORA: OK.

She takes one shrimp and opens her mouth when suddenly a RABBIT with pink eyes
runs by her.

RABBIT: Oh dear, oh dear! I shall be late!

The rabbit takes out a WATCH out of its WAISTCOAT- POCKET, and looks at it,
and then hurries on. Lora realizes that she has never before seen a rabbit with
either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch, and burning with curiosity,
she drops the shrimp on the floor and runs after it.

HAL & VINNIE: Damn! We were so close...

So, is she going to find the correct portal to meet in time with Rance and company?
I guess it remains to be seen...THE END.

I think you might be underestimating the discretionary income of teenage boys, or maybe just their persuasive powers! Or maybe parents today have just completely lost their minds and have parted happily with their Platinum Cards! Whatever the reason, teenage boys apparently now rule the world. That can be the only reason every entity from the Music Industry to Radio Stations use them as the target demographic. All this is in the way of saying, that if Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones or Renee Zellweger (sp?) had done the Dance numbers in their respective Musicals naked, the teenage boy-world ruling demographic would have gone berzerk. So while I, being a 40 year old female, think the idea of musicals is absolutely fantastic, as a studio head interested in turning a profit, you might want to rethink the idea, or at least include the naked starletts from the S.S. Dusty in the package! Just a suggestion!

Hello Rance,

Will Steve compromise his project and his integrity (or what?s left of it after fifteen years of living in Los Angeles)? Come on, Rance, finish the story!

I Hope you are indulging yourself to the fullest extent, wherever you may be. Drifting back into obscurity might be difficult now, any hint of celebrity will attract the masses. Well, at least you are appreciated, and judging from the quality of your posts, you have access to a wealth of mad ramblings, and interesting fan mail. If you should grow tired of your fame, there is always the option of faking your own demise, or just simply vanishing. Yes, you would be fodder for the internet gossip machinery, but the revenge would be yours: your identity would forever be a thing of speculation: Was he (or she-must be politically correct)? or wasn't he (or she)?

Then Again, hastening back to the age-old Neil Young Creed-"It's better to burn out, than to fade away"

Okay, good-bye, I must get back to studying for my impending LSAT Exam.

Is it any surprise this woman was an exec for a "brief" period of time?

It's 2004. Know how many times a year people over 40 go to the movies on average? Two. I have parents. It's not because there's nothing good playing; it's because they've got better things to do or just don't care. My 16 year old brothers go two or three times a week. Whose money do they spend? My parents. Kids like to go to the movies. Discretionary income? Jesus. Please give this woman her wish. In six weeks I'd be able to buy out the studio for $40 and a case of Rolling Rock.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to appeal to a wider audience or put out better material - God knows that should be the goal of us all - but let's be realistic. I wouldn't be shocked to learn that this woman was responsible for "Ishtar", "Coupling" (US version), Thalydomide, Ringo Starr, crack, "Dianetics", the Yugo, EuroDisney, West Nile and Color Me Badd.

MNM:

I LOVE so many of your ideas. I like the pairing of Jake G. and Susan Sarandon (whose daughter Eva Amurri is also turning into a great little actress - have you seen Saved??) and similar roles for women of a certain age. As Goldie Hawn (I think) said in the "First Wives Club", leading ladies in Hollywood currently come in only three ages - "babe, district attorney, and 'Driving Miss Daisy.'" Thank you for permitting a fourth possiblity of "mature sexpot." You may notice these women were around a lot more in the 50s and 60s...why is that I wonder???

I also am depressed at the cost of movie tickets nowadays. Did you know that the average cost of a movie in Manhattan at the theatres I attend is $10.25?? As in, ten DOLLARS and 25 CENTS. I mean, WTF? For that price, Brad Pitt should jump off the screen and give me half a lap dance. At LEAST.

However, I respectfully disagree with you on the musical issue. I can honestly say I have never left a movie theatre thinking, "You know what that movie needed? More tap dancing!" One exception: I too would LOVE to see Burton do Sweeney Todd...genius. Or maybe David Lynch.

Thanks for the great post.

All movies suck! Films are the lowest form of artistic expression. Culturally worthless, I applaud all those who use the internet to copy movies and music (which also sucks) for free. If only these worthless industries would cease to exist, then we wouldn't have to be inudated with only their crap. If I ran Fox studio for a year, I'd close it and padlock the front gate. THE gay guy, Ben in Miami? As if.

Anyway, Miss MNM, that was well-put, and well-taken, both of which are rarities in the blogging world. Kudos.

My sole point of contention: older people may *control* more discretionary income, but I believe statistics show that youth are more likely to *spend* their discretionary income in small and frequent bursts. Hence, kids spend more on both movies and the ludicrous crapola merchandise pushed down their throats in accompaniment to said overpriced tickets.

I personally think casting more attractive straight men as gay men would be a brilliant idea as well. And have all of them star in my bedroom.

This was going to be the main idea behind my Fox Studio essay: I thought to repeat the best ideas from this board and claim them as my own (very tongue-in-beak, you understand). So you have saved me much effort as pre-digested material is not for me. Thanks!

Thank you, Mrs. Maine, these suggestions are certainly the most worthwhile we have read thus far. We need more gals like you to set things straight. I am tired of looking at the mess we call entertainment, and would love to see more positive values and energy brought to our homes, more genuine talent. My generation (30 somethings)grew up with positive forms of entertainment, and watched it disintegrate. It's said we're the ones who miss it most. The younger generations have little to miss, and the older generations got to develop normally. That's one theory, anyhow. Regardless, it is simply nice to know that there are still people who understand and remember what we're all missing.

Thanks Rance and the Admin staff for great examples of good blogging and work slagging. American culture has something to contribute, no doubt!

And, while I haven't read all the comments, as entertaining and worthwhile as I'm sure they are, I can only quickly add that the increase in musicals and musically accented movies would be a great introduction that is worth a shot!.
And even better, one of the most fav actors, The Christopher Walken, has shown a great flair and love for the music. Now that's a bankable idea!

More musicals! More tap dancing! More more, indeed. I applaud you, Mrs. Norman Maine. You are the greatest star.

(you haven't seen a musical until you've seen "Singin' In The Rain" done in theater-in-the-round. With actual stunt water and ponchos handed out pre-show)
